What a dye test reveals about the quality of a swimming pool

People experiencing a dye test for the first time are often surprised. Within just a few minutes, the water in a pool turns a vivid yellow or purple. What at first appears to be a spectacular effect is, in reality, one of the most important indicators of a swimming pool facility’s quality.

This is because the dye test does more than just show how water moves in the pool. It reveals whether the entire water circulation system is functioning properly, whether the hydraulics and water treatment systems are working together optimally, and whether the requirements for hygienically safe operation are met.

For Berndorf Bäderbau, the dye test is therefore far more than just a regulatory requirement. It confirms that all components of the overall system have been precisely coordinated and that the facility can be operated safely and economically over the long term.

When water reveals what is otherwise hidden

Modern swimming pools are among the most technically sophisticated structures in existence. While the architecture and stainless-steel pool are visible to visitors, the critical technology operates behind the scenes.

Only the perfect interplay of the stainless-steel pool, hydraulics, and water treatment ensures that water quality, hygiene, and operational safety are guaranteed over the long term.

Berndorf Bäderbau plans precisely this interaction from a very early stage of the project. The hydraulics are not considered in isolation but are developed in conjunction with the water treatment system. Only when both systems are optimally coordinated can uniform water flow be achieved throughout the entire pool.

The dye test ultimately makes this interaction visible.

According to the requirements of EN 15288-2, it must be demonstrated that water flows completely through a pool within a maximum of 15 minutes. To do this, a contrast agent is introduced via the inflow system. Uranin or Azochrom Black, for example, are used. While Uranin turns the water yellow, Azochrom Black creates a particularly high contrast and makes flow patterns even more visible.

The distribution of the color is then observed. The goal is uniform flow without dead zones—that is, areas where water circulation is insufficient.

Hydraulics and water treatment work as a single unit

A swimming pool is only as good as the interaction of its technical systems.

Even the best water treatment system can only perform to its full potential if the hydraulic system distributes the treated water evenly throughout the entire pool. Conversely, even the best hydraulic system cannot deliver its full benefits if the water treatment system is not optimally coordinated with it.

That is why we at Berndorf Bäderbau work closely with local water treatment specialists.

The combination of floor inlets and an overflow channel is particularly efficient. The treated water is introduced in a controlled manner through the pool floor and flows evenly upward. Impurities are continuously transported to the overflow channel and subsequently removed from the circulation system by the water treatment system.

The result is uniform water flow throughout the entire pool, which forms the basis for consistently high water quality, optimal hygiene, and cost-effective operation.

A dye test then confirms that this entire system functions exactly as planned.

Smart Hydraulics Saves Costs

Berndorf Bäderbau also sets itself apart from many traditional solutions when it comes to hydraulic design.

While inflow systems are often designed strictly according to standard specifications, Berndorf Bäderbau views each project as a complete system comprising a stainless-steel pool, hydraulics, and water treatment. This results in solutions that are equally impressive from both a technical and economic standpoint.

Thanks to decades of experience and proprietary flow-optimized inflow nozzles, Berndorf Bäderbau can often achieve the same flow quality with significantly fewer inflow elements. The nozzles generate targeted horizontal and vertical water movement. This allows for greater spacing between the inflow points without compromising hydraulic performance or water quality.

This not only reduces material and installation costs. Depending on the project, the costs for the inflow channels can also be reduced by up to 20 percent.

The subsequent dye test ultimately confirms that the planned solution meets all requirements.

For designers and public clients, this means lower investment costs, fewer components, and a comprehensive hydraulic design based on Berndorf Bäderbau’s many years of experience.

Often, the greatest potential for savings comes not from cheaper materials, but from intelligently planned technology.

Quality begins long before the grand opening

A successful dye test does not begin on the day of acceptance.

It is the result of careful planning, in which Berndorf Bäderbau develops stainless steel pools, hydraulics, and water treatment together from the very beginning. All components are precisely coordinated with one another so that they function as a complete system later on.

Even the slightest deviations can influence flow conditions and affect water quality, hygiene, and operation.

That is why, for Berndorf Bäderbau, the dye test is not merely proof for regulatory authorities, but confirmation that planning, design, water treatment, and execution are perfectly integrated.

More Than Just an Appointment with the Government

For planners, architects, and operators, the dye test is much more than just a spectacular discoloration of the water.

It demonstrates that the entire technical design of a swimming pool is functioning properly. It confirms the perfect interplay between hydraulics, water treatment, and the stainless steel pool, and highlights the factors that will later determine water quality, hygiene, operational safety, and cost-effectiveness.

This is precisely where Berndorf Bäderbau’s strength lies. Through the holistic planning of all water-carrying systems, we create swimming pools that not only pass technical verification but can also be operated reliably and cost-effectively for decades.
